No movement for the President, VV continues with warnings that Kurti will intensify efforts

Upon returning from London, Prime Minister Albin Kurti was expected to begin intensifying meetings with political parties at the end of the week and at the beginning of the following week to find a candidate for President of the country, while the deadline has entered the last two weeks. At least, this is what Arbërie Nagavci, head of the Vetëvendosje Movement Parliamentary Group, warned. However, there is no movement from the largest party in the country, which continues to have two of its members nominated for this position.

Nagavci, on Friday of last week, warned that Prime Minister Albin Kurti, after returning from London, will have meetings with opposition parties to find a solution to the President’s issue.

“The Prime Minister has a presentation today, he is in London as you know. Meanwhile, I believe that during the weekend, but also very soon, we will continue with meetings,” Nagavci declared on Friday.

But, today she made a similar statement, again warning about Kurti’s commitment, while implying that he is already working in this direction.

“Regarding the issue of the president, Prime Minister Kurti is continuing his efforts, I believe that in the remaining days we will reach agreement and support, namely concrete proposals and find a solution for the election of the president,” said Nagavci.

The Vetëvendosje Movement had proposed its deputy leader, Foreign Minister Glauk Konjufca, as well as its MP Fatmire Mullhaxha-Kollçaku for the position of President.

Vetëvendosje has not moved from these proposals of its two members while figures from this party continue to throw the ball at the opposition parties that they should provide names. These statements are being made in parallel with the statements that the Vetëvendosje Movement is not for elections and that citizens should not be “tortured” and “maltreated” with elections despite the fact that two such national parties were held back for a year in 2025 due to the inability to form a government after the February elections.

Vetëvendosje Movement MP Ilir Kërçeli, saying that the country does not need new elections and that it is “a little harmful” to enter the electoral process, said that there is no name from either PDK or LDK.

“I think we should all find a common language and elect a president and not trouble the citizens any more and take them to the elections once again, because in the year we left behind we had four electoral processes, including the electoral process for local elections and the runoff, as well as two national elections. So I hope that a common language will be found, a consensual name for the president and we will get through this crisis,” Kërçeli said last night on the Tempus show.

While they are asking for a name from them, the Democratic Party of Kosovo said that they have not received any letter for a meeting from the Vetëvendosje Movement.

The Secretary General of this party, Vlora Çitaku, said that Vetëvendosje should approach this issue seriously by formalizing an invitation.

“The election of the president is a very important moment for a parliamentary democracy. And we have stated that this issue should be treated with the seriousness that it deserves, the issue in question, and we have asked Mr. Kurti to formalize his request to the Democratic Party of Kosovo in a written letter. Until now, such a letter has not arrived at the address of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, perhaps there are other addresses,” she said.

While he did not meet with PDK after the Constitutional Court’s verdict, Kurti met once with LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku.

At this meeting, Abdixhiku said that they did not discuss new names other than those proposed by the Vetëvendosje Movement. While speaking to reporters on Saturday, Abdixhiku left open the possibility of new meetings this week.

“Now we will see during the next week to see the possibility of other meetings. That’s the truth, there are no other developments. We have not proposed a name, we have not given anything, and nothing has been asked of us yet. This is the only truth. And on this truth we will see how matters will develop further,” he said.

However, regarding the LDK, he said that it is unacceptable for one party to hold all three main positions in the state.

In addition to Kurti, Abdixhiku announced that he had also held a meeting on this issue with the leader of the PDK, Bedri Hamza, while for the leader of the AAK, Ramush Haradinaj, Abdixhiku said that he had refused.

One name that Abdixhiku brought to attention again was former president Vjosa Osmani.

“The president should be a unifying figure who does foreign policy well and opens doors to key world tables, I believe that Vjosa Osmani has been an excellent candidate for this,” he said on Saturday.

While the public is not seeing any commitments from the Vetëvendosje Movement to avoid extraordinary elections, there are MPs who are showing optimism, but without indicating how a solution will be achieved.

“I think we are on the right track and will exhaust all possibilities. Now we have time ahead, there are still many days available and I think that each of the political actors should do their utmost to come to a solution regarding the head of state and to avoid elections, which are not desirable for anyone,” said the day before the LVV MP, Driton Hyseni.

Hysen’s party colleague, Mefail Bajqinovci, also expressed similar hopes. But unlike Hysen, he also found the culprit who would cause the elections.

“I am very convinced that there will be a solution to the President’s issue. Based on what I am seeing. I believe that there will be reflection, because if the opposition leads us to elections, we know what their fate will be,” he told RTV21 today, adding that “the blame and shame lies with the opposition” because they have not sent names as requested by Vetëvendosje.
